[erin]"I can't," there was a flare of panic in her voice, explained by the rest of it. "It'll put you in danger. Because when I get in danger, when I might actually be hurt, a goddamned archangel shows up. That's why I was doing that thing, earlier, with the talking. If he comes down, he...humans aren't meant to see angels, or hear their voices. Not the real them. The first time it happened, he showed up and the other girl who was in the car with me that was in the middle of crashing? It burned out her eyes. And her ears. And she has brain damage now." A shiver and she couldn't stop herself from touching the pocket that had the flask in it, though she didn't pull it out.
"If shit's getting tense here, I'll just put you guys in danger. And you seem way too nice to get melted."[/erin]

They both just stared at her, neither one really sure what to say to that. Just as the silence was stretching from awkward to painful, the buzzer on the old stove went off.
"Dinner," Wyatt said, turning around, shoulders stiff again, and pulling the chicken parm bake from the oven.
"He wants to be all noble and say he doesn't give a shit, but 'melted' was a really vivid word," Dani said gently.
"I can talk real good all by myself, Mouse," Wyatt said, getting plates and silverware and stuff. "That's a real shitty deal you've got." That last, most likely, was to Erin.

[erin]Erin just shook her head. "It's cool. I don't want you guys getting melted, vividly or otherwise." She smiled and killed the rest of her beer in a slightly too-long series of swallows. "Anyway, that's why I get all stoked when I get one that I get to come out and help with. Mostly I have to sort of watch helplessly and then write it down like it's something pretend."[/erin]

"So that's it? You sit alone waiting for a...a...revelation or whatever and maybe a personal visit from an angel and write it all down and...that's it?" Dani asked.
Wyatt groaned inwardly. He knew what was happening here, he recognized the signs.

[erin]A shrug and a confused look. "Mostly, yes. I mean, in between there's trying to earn a living and have a friend or two and maybe even get laid once in a while. But mostly life is vision, write about it, drink until I can sleep. Later, rinse, repeat. Why?"[/erin]

"See?" Wyatt asked Dani, handing out plates and sounding somewhat desperate, "Friends and sex."
But it was too late and all the damage had been done. "Good," Dani said. "Then since you're sticking around and all," Wyatt was trying to remember when that had been decided; just because the chick was staying a few nights down at the Sunset didn't mean she was staying forever, "I think we should be friends."
Wyatt rolled his eyes as he went back to the fridge to get everyone drinks. It was so cute how she made it sound like Erin had any choice in the matter when in her head she'd already adopted the prophet.
A freaking prophet. Seriously. It was just what he needed on his already full and very weird plate.

[erin]A wispy, overwhelmed laugh as Erin tried, honestly and truly, to remember the last time somebody said they wanted to be her friend. It might have been high school. "Did you miss the part where people I'm hanging out with occasionally get melted by angels? You realize that sane people avoid that kind of situation?" She murmured a thanks to Wyatt for the plate, when she wasn't thinking about it Erin still behaved like the nice girl she'd been raised to be.[/erin]

"Yeah, sure," Dani shrugged, "But you're forgetting two very important facts."
Here it comes, thought Wyatt.
"One, I'm not human. Two, I have a whole different outlook on death than a lot of people. Is getting all melty my chosen way to go? Not really. But I don't fear death, Erin, not even a little. And I know more than most that there's no bigger sin than wasting the time we have. I like you, I want to be your friend. Now smile and nod and say yes and eat your dinner. Wyatt's a hell of a cook."

[erin]Erin looked more than a little dubious. "Okay, I'll grant you that the food is an inducement. And I'm not too proud to admit that yeah, so is the notion of having actual friends. But Wyatt is human, and maybe he doesn't want to get melted."
She glanced over at Wyatt, pulling the kitten off her knee and dropping him back down to the ground before he could get any cute ideas about jumping for the table. "Do you get a vote in this, at all?"[/erin]

Wyatt sounded resigned as he shrugged and said, "I rarely do."
"Don't let him fool you," Danika said with a shrug of her own. "If he wasn't okay with it it'd be all," she lowered her voice in an imitation of his, adding the twang that she herself didn't have, "'Danika, can I talk to you? Outside? Now? Because subtlety is something other people do and scowling and being obvious are what I do?'"
Wyatt snorted in actual amusement as he set glasses of milk, which he thought all Italian style food should be accompanied by, in front of all them. "Mouse, shut up and eat your dinner before it gets cold."
"Yessir," Dani said easily, trying to lower her eyes and look submissive and just failing miserably.

[erin]She couldn't help it, she started laughing down at her plate of (really tasty) chicken. "Wow. Maybe I do want to hear the story of how you two met after all. But okay, I know how to quit when I'm way, way, way behind. I'll see if I can find a job in town."
It was sad that part of the inducement was that maybe she could get an apartment and have a kitten, right? Yeah, it was sad. But also true. No matter how desperately Erin tried to convince herself and other people that she was all hardened and casual, more of her was still the good Lutheran girl who'd wanted to be a veterinarian than wasn't.[/erin]

Danika was looking so pleased with herself that Wyatt snorted. "Sometimes it's just easier to give in. Sometimes she even lets you think it was your idea in the first place."
"What can I say, I'm a giver," Dani said happily. "And you shouldn't have too hard a time finding a job. Just say you know Wy and me."

[erin]Erin dropped her eyes to her plate to hide the amusement in them as she asked sweetly, "Universally beloved, are you? Now why do I get the feeling that Dani's going to say 'yes' and Wyatt's going to say 'no'?"[/erin]

Dani gave her her best innocently dumbfounded face. "I thought you said you weren't psychic."

[erin]A low choke of laughter right as Erin went to take a sip of milk almost turned into real choking, but she held it together. "Not psychic. Observant." She glanced over at Wyatt to see how he was taking this mild teasing and whether he was feeling the need to start glowering again.[/erin]
