"Yeah," Wyatt said slowly, "Hadn't really worked that bit out yet."
"Great," Dani groaned, eyes jerking to Erin as she started not losing her shit, and then swung at another demon as she appeared.
"Doing the best I can here," Wyatt grunted, standing up with the long strips of cloth he'd just cut, eyes traveling upward. "I have an idea."
He reached up and took down Dani's curtains, pulling the rod apart and dumping the curtains to the ground. There was a decorative piece on either end, a sort of swirl, and he nodded. It'd do.
Within two minutes he'd made a mockery of a good catch pole, with one red strip looped in on itself and tied just right around the curly-q of the decoration.
As another demon showed itself, he moved in front of Erin, lunging at it. He missed and got himself cut up pretty good before Dani dispatched it. But the next one he caught, tugged the rod just enough to tighten the cloth and pull the rod itself free.
Instead of the smoke like spreading and disappearing they'd had before, this time the creature seemed to splinter and sort of explode.
Standing, the surprise plain on his face, Wyatt said, "Guess that works."

[erin]"You see?" Erin was narrating directly to Metatron, she could feel the hot weight of the Voice practically pressing down on her. And maybe that was just her imagination and paranoia, but maybe it wasn't and so she kept trying to talk him out of feeling he needed to visit. "He totally made that work. This is gonna be no sweat. There is absolutely no danger here, these are practically not even real demons. They're like DemonLite. Training Demons with soft cups in triple-A size."
She kept talking, quiet but steady, even as she was swinging the iron poker any time any of the Acheri got too close. The scratch on her arm was bleeding freely but not dangerously and she was managing for the moment to avoid taking any other damage.[/erin]

Wyatt didn't know how long it took, the girls hammering at the demons while he worked the cloths around their necks, but by the end of it he was praying for arm transplants and bleeding profusely from several wounds on his hands and face.
None of them were untouched, Dani wounded as well, though hers had already closed and were rapidly fading.
"Is that it?" she asked, breathing heavily and looking bone weary.
He waited a good five minutes to answer. "I think so," he said with a nod.
She nodded as well. "Good," she said, and then launched herself at him, hammering at him with her fists and speaking between blows. "Do - you - know - how - long - it - took - to - save - for - that?"
He looked honestly surprised by the anger and pummeling before shoving her away and laughing. "You're welcome for the ass saving, you bitch."
She glowered at him then swung her gaze to Erin. "Who the hell were you talking to?" If he wasn't going to fight with her, maybe new girl would.

[erin]Erin was slumped against the wall, breathing hard and trying to decide whether she'd strained something. "I'd promise to buy you a new one, but I'm poor." When all of a sudden she was being glared at, she sighed and reached around to pull a flask out of the hip pocket of her skirt. She spun the cap with a thumb, took a good swig and then poured a little over the deep scrapes on her arm, hissing at how wonderful that didn't feel.
"It's complicated. I was trying to keep things from getting worse. Which if I'd panicked, would have happened." A weak smile. "It's a pretty shit coping mechanism, huh?"[/erin]

Realizing that neither one of them was going to oblige her adrenaline fueled anger, Dani deflated and went to lean against the wall by Erin, taking the flask from her and taking a long pull.
Wincing, she said, "Hey, whatever works," ignoring the way Wyatt's eyes went amused at how raspy the alcohol made her voice.
"I need to go check on the horses," he said, tossing the curtain rod on the bed and striding out of the room.
"Be careful," she called after him, but didn't make a move to go with him. She'd had enough for one night and if he was going to get his fool self killed she'd know. Probably not in time to save him, but right now she was almost okay with that.
"He might get around to saying it? But just in case, thanks. For warning us and the rest of it. Lot of people wouldn't do that."

[erin]She grinned and took another hit. "Hey, it was fun. Well, kind of fun. Well, terrifying and painful. But it feels kinda good in the aftermath."
It really did. The adrenaline was still flooding her system, she felt kind of floaty and jittery and maybe she could see why people do this. Or, okay, some of them probably had other reasons than an endorphin high. But she still felt good.
Good enough, that it took until now to ask, "You okay? You get hit at all?"[/erin]

"Yes," Dani said to both questions. "I got hit, but I'll be fine," she added, pulling the bloodied collar of her shirt aside to show the pinkened skin that was already healed. She figured if Erin came to help save her life, she wouldn't go about trying to kill her now. Wyatt said she was too trusting, but she left it to him to have a stick up his ass, she was happier to try to believe in the good in people.
Besides, no way this chick was a hunter.
"Let me see your arm?" she asked, taking it without asking and frowning. "You need butterflies, if not a couple stitches. Come downstairs and let me patch you up?"

[erin]The minute she looked at the scratches they started hurting like hell. It was always the way; she knew that from Eve and Kai, not personal experience. "Ow. Okay."
She followed Dani downstairs, one last pass at the bourbon and then she put it away. "You good at the patching-up, then? Practice on Himself?" She was still a little edgy about Wyatt, at least until she interacted with him in a non-violence way.[/erin]

"Wyatt? Oh hell no," Dani laughed happily, as though they hadn't spent the last hour or more fighting off demons sent to...do whatever to her. "He's way too cranky, I make him fend for himself. Sit." In the kitchen now, Dani pulled the stool over to sit next to the small white table that served as an island, nodding to it along with her command. "Besides," she said as she moved down the hall to the bathroom, voice carrying, "He's out of the life now. Worst he gets anymore is a kick to the head, which he deserves every single time." Reappearing with a large blue tackle box, she set it on the table and opened it, revealing that it was full of first aid supplies and not fishing lures. "We get a fair amount of hunters through here, though, I'm sure Eve mentioned that," she said, lifting her eyes briefly to look at Erin, but she went back to pulling supplies out as she went on, "More often than I like, they're beaten up one way or another. I could be half way to medical degree by now if researching injuries and how to heal them counted for credit."

[erin]Erin laid her arm out for Dani to work on but then stubbornly refused to look at it while the other girl worked. "That part I did know. It's cute how you pretend that that counts as being 'out of the life', seriously. Even on days when demons don't flood your home with evil in smoky-little-girl form. Seriously, adorable." She grinned over at Dani without at all glancing down to see what was happening to her own flesh.[/erin]

Dani laughed, the sound maybe just a little happy because she was pouring peroxide over the wound. It wouldn't burn like the alcohol, but it would sting and that Erin deserved for the cute comment.
"Okay," she did manage to allow, though, "How does 'less in the life' work for you? That sound better? Sure does to me." She lowered her voice then. "Wyatt wouldn't last a year if he was really in." Something Eve probably also would have mentioned.

[erin]As Erin had, in fact, never met Eve Amherst in the flesh no matter how often she saw brain-searingly vivid reenactments of the woman's life, she went ahead and just asked, "Why wouldn't he? Is he injured?" She hadn't seen any sign of him favoring a bad leg or stiff arm during the fight, but there were some wounds that didn't show that way.[/erin]

Dani's eyes came up again. "She didn't tell you?" she asked, having a good idea of the answer since she'd been dropping bits of information trying to suss it out of her. "Injured's one way of putting it, I guess."
"Putting what?" Wyatt asked as he returned, carrying the hat that had fallen off while he'd been running around trying to take care of the horses.
"Doesn't matter," Dani decided, more about Erin and whether or not she was telling the truth about Eve. "Everybody okay?"
"Goliath kicked a couple boards loose, but I have them fixed enough that they'll last the night. That as bad as it looks?" he nodded to Erin's arm.
"Yeah, but I'll get her patched. Here," she handed him the peroxide, "Wash those," she nodded to his own scratches, "Out. And ask our savior to stay for dinner."
He looked less than enthusiastic for a moment but then said, "Guess feeding you's the least we can do."
"He's a charmer," Dani said, rolling her eyes at Erin as she poked at the worst of the wounds. "This needs stitching."

[erin]Erin didn't push once Wyatt came back, but did go ahead and add mildly, "My relationship with the Amhersts is, like everything else in my life, kind of overly complicated."
But then she dropped it and gave Wyatt a big bright smile. "He sure is. Gosh, how's a catch like you still off the market?" Then laughed and said, "I'd love to stay. Among other things, I'm pretty sure I'm fired now since I left in the middle of a shift. I don't suppose there are any good bars in this town that might be looking for a bartender?"
She hissed when Dani poked at the deep scratch. "Fine. Hang on." She peeled off the blood-spattered sweatshirt she'd been wearing and chucked it into the trash. Underneath she was wearing a black lace tank top and a black lace bra that between them did a merely adequate job of concealing her nipples. She hit the flask again and flopped her arm out to Dani. "Do it. I'm all big and bad."[/erin]

"There're a couple," Dani nodded, threading a needle and keeping one eye on her brother to make sure he cleaned his wounds, "And you can stay here until you find one. S'least we can do."
"Dani," Wyatt warned.
"Psychopomp, she called me," Dani shrugged, "She knows something's up, Wy, and if she wanted me dead all she had to do was not warn us. And really, I think my life's worth a week or two of room and board."
"Fine, but she stays in the bunkhouse."
"You'll like it out there," Dani assured Erin, "It's cheerier."
