So he answered the easiest question. "He ain't feral," he nodded to the cat, sitting on her shoulder, pointing out the obvious even as he kept explaining, "The barn cats are maybe more wild than a house cat, but Dani makes sure they're all tame to us." Which took a lot of work and caused some problems. The theory was that Dani smelled of dog on some level and so the kittens trusted dogs, which had gotten more than one litter killed. They were still working on a solution.
As to the rest, he shrugged. Without going into a full blown soliloquy, how could he explain it all? He went with his own story, feeling Dani's was her own and not sure he wanted it told yet. Not sure he wanted Erin to know they weren't siblings and exactly what Dani was.
"Every hunter's path starts bloody, mine ain't any different. Had a wife, had a daughter, then I didn't. Took up the trade and was - " he couldn't think of the word.
"Awful," Dani supplied as she returned in fresh clothes - yoga pants and one of Wyatt's tee shirts - "He was just plain awful."
"I did well enough," he defended.
"Sure he did," she said with a grin to Erin as she came over to nuzzle at the kitten. "I'm kinda surprised he wasn't killed."
"I'm safer as a way station for other hunters," Wyatt admitted even though after all this time it still hurt his pride to say it out loud.
"And a librarian," Dani piped up. At a look from Wyatt, she laughed. "What else you want me to call it? You have a massive library, Wy, and half of it memorized. What's a better word?"
When he didn't answer, she looked at Erin cheekily. "Can you think of one?"

[erin]Actually trying to be kind here, Erin thought about it for a minute and came up with, "Fixer. If you keep an archive, that means they call you when they can't figure out how to deal with something. You fix it." She reached up and gently detached the kittens claws from the back of his neck, then petted him so that he wouldn't think he was in trouble or anything. Because of course that would be topmost in his evil little feline mind.
And because fair is fair, "I'm a prophet. Different from seers, those jammy bastards get little flashes of whatever's important going on in the world. My gig is the whole Prophet of the Lord thing and it's focused on humanity's role in the doings of heaven and hell. The visions are, uh, not fun and they come on whenever they feel like it whether I'm in the middle of a shift or during dinner or, most hilariously awkward breakup story ever, during sex."
Shrugging as though it didn't matter, because she was so emotionally stunted that she reacted to these kinds of things like she was still a teenager, "So that's how I knew about the Acheri and what to do about them."[/erin]

Maybe if his adopted sister wasn't what she was he'd have a hard time with that, but since he lived the life he did, he only said, "Huh," to that, with a vague sort of nod as he accepted the information.
Dani, however, was grinning broadly. "No shit, during sex? God, I'd die if that happened to me." At a sharp, vaguely disgusted look from Wyatt, she added as though by rote, "Not that I like to have the sex because ew." Rolling her eyes, she laughed again.
"I'm a Grim. Portent of death, bringer of death, protector of spirits, depends on the lore you read. Kind of a...reaper lite? Or something. Anyway, the city and surrounding mileage is my territory, me and a couple others, and I'm sort of stuck here. And turn into a big black dog whenever it's time to go to work. But it's never come on during all that sex I never have. You win there, on the suckage front." Although, with the way she was talking and gesturing and smiling, it was pretty clear that Danika enjoyed what she was very much.

[erin]Erin nodded. "Psychopomp. At least, that's the word that came with the vision. Angels, though. They use weird phrasing. I think their Enochian to English online translator is still in beta." She was good at flippant, though not as good as she thought she was. "It's all good. What you do is important. I get that not all hunters are likely to understand that, but it's true. For all that some of 'em get all 'if it aint human, kill it with fire', there's more to the world than black and white." Like her. Erin was in no way convinced that her power represented a benevolent force in the universe.[/erin]

"So you can understand," Wyatt said slowly, the twang gone to soft, pointed drawl, "Why we need it kept secret."
He still wasn't sure if they could trust this chick, but it was Dani's secret to tell and she'd told and, apparently, Erin had already known. It still left him feeling twitchy, though.

[erin]Sort of out of nowhere, Erin went all soft and worried, dropping her eyes pulling the kitten down to curl him up in one cupped palm. "I'll try." And, a moment later, "There's a sort of a...compulsion, it comes with the visions. I have to write them down, preserve them. But I'll try to make it so that the names and identifying information isn't anything anybody could use to track you." It was literally the best she could do, and she wasn't a hundred percent sure she could manage even that.[/erin]

Wyatt was tensing and Dani was moving to lay a hand on his shoulder and keep him in his seat. "It's not her fault if she can't help it." She was trying very hard to believe that and to remain calm. It had taken them years to build this life, she didn't want to have to leave it, though she would, even if she couldn't go that far. Shit, she shouldn't have told her about being stuck in her territory.
"If you tell on us and use our names and details, will you at least warn us that you did?" she asked Erin, wanting to explain it was so they could have a head start but if Erin didn't figure that out she wasn't going to say it so she'd spill the beans on that, too.

[erin]Erin nodded, watching the kitten instead of the siblings. "I'll show it to you. I don't think many hunters read it anyway. If any do. God knows I try hard enough to disguise it as stupidity." But she still wasn't allowed to censor it. She could withold details, sometimes, but she couldn't leave things out. That was Against The Rules and a sure way to send herself catatonic and earn herself a visit from Metatron or one of his buddies.[/erin]

"Show us?" Wyatt asked, getting up from the table to check the casserole and pulling it out of the oven to add a healthy layer of cheese before putting it back in. "You mean you print it out or something?"

[erin]Erin looked incredibly pained as she rubbed her hand across the back of her neck and continued to refuse eye contact with anyone except the kitten. "It's a blog. Most people think it's a roleplaying or fanfic blog, you know, those Supernatural books? There's a disturbingly high daily hit count, but nobody seems to have cottoned on to what it's actually talking about. They just think I use current events in my lame fiction."[/erin]

Wyatt looked dumbfounded. "That's - "
"Really smart," Dani said before he could say anything unintentionally cruel. Wyatt didn't always think before he spoke. "I mean, if you don't want people knowing what's really up." A beat. "Why don't you want people to know what's really up?"

[erin]"I was told that the people who need to know it will find it, the ones who don't need to know it can believe that it's fiction. But I have to preserve it, every single word, and I move around too much to be carrying stacks of notebooks. I back up the blog to a couple different places every night and call that good." God she hated talking about this shit. It always sounded so delusional.[/erin]

Dani had no reason not to believe her, really. Probably because of the whole turning into a dog thing.
"That's got to be," she said, shaking her head because she couldn't really even imagine what it must be like.
"Fucking sucks, huh?" Wyatt supplied. "But it explains the drinking." Yeah, he'd noticed.

[erin]She shrugged, instantly on the defensive. "The blinding headaches that come with the visions and the occasional visit from angels bearing fiery swords or, worse, the actual Voice of God if shit gets real mostly is what causes the drinking. The rest is what I blame for the smoking, swearing, and inability to hold down a job."[/erin]

"You could work here," Dani offered, even though Erin had already turned down staying with them. "We could use another pair of hands - we could, Wy, you were just saying so the other day. Something's going on and it has more hunters coming through at all hours, calling all the time...."
"It's true," Wyatt said, as far as he could make himself go with that.
