Papa Winchester is a tall man standing at six foot two, quite simply put he has one hell of a presence and yes he does use the height to his advantage in order to loom over anyone shorter then him. Granted simply the way the man carries himself tends to make other people shrink a few inches when faced with him. Some would think that his presence may have softened with age, but don't be fooled by the salt and pepper beard, or the perpetually messy hair.
Even after having spent the last five years in Hell John is still in the great shape he always kept himself in before he died. The only real difference is the weary look in his soulfull brown eyes, almost heart wrenching in the pain that lies in them, there also seems to be more scars littering his body then before. But what hasn't changed is the old mans sense of fashion, since the nineteen eighties to be exact. John can normally be found wearing a pair of worn in jeans, heavy boots, plaid over shirts and a leather bomber jacket that goes with him everywhere no matter the weather.

[app]Overall Personality:[/app]
Mysterious. Ever since Mary died John has spent his life in the trenches, looking for any sign of the demon that took his wife from him and killing everything else that he come across. Because of that, he’s kept himself and his life under wraps from everyone and everything, because in this line of business secrecy is a must least some unfavorable character come calling for you. But sometimes John goes a little too far with how much he's willing to keep quiet, even going so far as to appear detached from his sons, the two people he trust the most. He's just so used to playing everything close to the chest, and he doesn't want something particularly nasty going after his children because it thought that they would know something, so he keeps everything except for the bare bones of an idea from them. John feels bad about having gotten them involved in this in the first place, he doesn't want to pull them deeper into something if he doesn't have to.
Charming. It seems to be a thing with the Winchester family, the man has a way with words, and even more so he just has this amazing charismatic way about him that tends to attract people to him. John has always had a good reputation with other hunters, even though he was normally a solo hunter, he also had a bit of a reputation with women though he never let his sons in on that part. Always discreet about it because at the end of the day, the only woman that ever had his heart was their mother. That charming charisma though had a habit of backfiring every now and then, and there's definitely a point where some people could have a little too much John Winchester in their life, which would normally lead to the man having a gun pointed at him, yes it's happened more then once. Sometimes, the man's personality is just a little too strong.
Tormented. The fact that he couldn't save his wife is something that has plagued him every single day since that night in question. A man that served in the army, ran through bullets and earned himself a medal for bravery in the face of danger, he pulled other men back from the brink of death and he couldn't save his own wife. It's like the he's stuck in his own personal version of Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven. The fact that he's literally been down to Hell and back has left it's own stain on his soul, he lives with a fear of getting dragged back even though he would do it all over again in a second to save Dean if he had to. Something else that drives him to the brink is knowing that his children have died more then once, and have both ended up in Hell, he feels like he's personally responsible for this, for having raised them in this environment in the first place,
Vengeful. Twenty or so years of his life has been dedicated to hunting down and killing the thing that originally tore his family apart. It's been the driving force in his life and of everything he's done since the day it happened, that righteous need for retribution is the fire that has kept him going. Sometimes its clouded his judgment, but it isn't something he can shake off so easily. Now that he's back from Hell his motivation is going after the things that went after his children and the things that took their time torturing him in Hell. John has a serious bone to pick with more then a few demons now, and though he has a new lease and direction on life, his 'retirement' is only semi-heartfelt. The man does plan on going after the things that made the mistake of going after his children, even if the search get's him pulled back to the pit again.

[app]Overall History:[/app]
Born in the fifties to a long line of mechanics, John was your average all American boy, he liked girls, rock music, and cheeseburgers. An average kid in school he was a star athlete who worked on cars with his dad when he got home from school, prepped to follow in the old family business of fixing up cars. He met Mary Campbell while he was in high school and honestly? He couldn't stand the chick. She was too brash, too bold, and she made it clear that she wasn't his biggest fan either so John made it a point to try and stay far away from the woman during most of their high school career.
Right towards the end of his senior year though John enlisted in the marines, in hopes of doing his civil duty and serving his country in the brewing war in Vietnam. Prom Night though, he caught a look at Mary Winchester standing there across the room looking all soft and pretty in this dress that he can't quite remember cause he was too busy watching the light play off her hair and he was floored. It was endgame right there, from that moment he only had eyes for that brash, crazy blond and spent as much time as he could with her till he found himself getting shipped off to the forefront of the war.
War was, well, war. It was loud. It was bloody, the men around him were dropping like flies and John was doing his best to fulfill his duties as a good soldier and stay alive at the same time. Sixty days spent in the trenches of Vietnam John rose to the rank of Corporal, he won a USMC Expert Rifle Badge because he was just that good with a firearm, a bronze star because he put his ass on the line to pull wounded squad mates out of the line of fire, and eventually a purple heart for taking a bullet through the shoulder from a sniper while his squad broke through a commie stronghold. It was this wound that got him honorable discharge and as soon he was well enough, he was back home in Kansas, standing beside his dear Mary once more.
It wasn't long after he came back from the war that he proposed to Mary and started working at his fathers shop, ready to start his life with the woman that captured his attention so damn vividly that one night. Everything seemed to be perfect, they got themselves a nice little house in his hometown, Mary found herself to be pregnant after one steamy night at the Grand Canyon that John still looks back on fondly. And then Dean was born, and the moment John held that baby in his arms that kid was automatically the apple of his eye, but there were a few cracks showing in their marriage because nothing is perfect. Mary was always so damn defensive and evasive when it came to anything that had to do with her history or her family and the fact that he was never allowed to really meet or hang around with her family was something that would wear him out. The distance made him suspicious and distant in turn, and he moved out one point, thinking that distance might help when they found out that she was pregnant with Sam.
Sammy helped get their marriage back together, even if every now and then they looked a little more weary then utterly adoring of each other. He loved her though, through it all he really did love his wife,m which was why he was so terribly devastated that night in November when the Yellow Eyed demon took his Mary from him. Everything spiraled out of control that night and he was pulled into a world that he would have never thought existed, dragging his children with him because after finding out the truth, he didn't trust anyone with his children and he wanted them to be prepared in case something else came their way.
Did he really want to take his children down this road? No but he didn't know what to expect and he didn't want to be caught unawares where his boys were concerned, he had lost his wife, he refused to lose his sons as well even if that meant a nomadic life of diner food and cheap motels. Every now and then, though he was a solo hunter he would get together with others for any really important hunts and normally John was at his peak, but everyone makes a mistake every now and then and this was what happened with poor William Anthony Harvelle. John recalls it as the worst mistake he ever made, accidentally scuffing up the salt line he had put down, it was the reason that William ended up dead.
Its another memory that has pained him ever since, he liked to think of himself as a good friend to the Harvelle family, but after that, he couldn't bring himself to show his face in the Roadhouse ever again, utterly ashamed of what had happened. He did though make a good friend of Bobby Singer, an established hunter who knew just about everything about everything John could hope to learn, but they had a bit of a falling out where his sons were concerned. Bobby didn't approve of John dragging his growing boys around in this life, but John was too afraid of what could happen to them if he left them with someone else and he refused to stop hunting until he killed the thing that killed Mary in the first place. They were at an impasse and the last time they got into an argument, things got ugly and John decided not to take a chance of being shot at by Bobby, deciding it best to stay away.
While on a hunt in Minnesota, John was injured and met a pretty nurse at the hospital. The man was quite the charmer and had broken a fair share of hearts before her and even afterward, but this one was significant in that the condom broke. Kate assured him she was on the pill and that everything was alright and as soon as John was in good health again, he was gone. The time spent after that was used tracking the demon that killed Mary and killing everything else that came across his path, trying to raise his sons to be able to defend themselves against anything and everything. He thought it was going well enough until he got that phone call twelve years later telling him he had another child out there. Honestly? John's stomach dropped, he had never loved Kate, but he wasn't going to stay out of the picture of his child and every now and then when he had the chance he would go and visit Adam, doing the more conventional things with him and trying to keep him as far from the hunting life as possible.
When Sam decided to leave him for school, the man couldn't say he was surprised the boy was intelligent and head strong and destined for more then this, hell Dean was too, but he couldn't stand the idea of his children leaving him. Still Sam would not be persuaded otherwise and John had no choice but to let him go, saying he would cut off all contact. He made it seem that it was because he was angry, in reality? He didn't want something going after Sam, there was this overwhelming fear of something happening to his little boy and that's what kept John coming back to check up on him from time to time.
With Sam leaving, he realized that maybe he was holding on a little too tightly to the boys and let Dean go off on his own hunts, using the time away from him to further his investigation of the demon that killed Mary and finding a way to kill the damn thing. The closer he got, the more dangerous and tangled everything became, on the trail of The Colt he ran afoul of a woman named Bela Talbot. She was hot, but man was she a bitch and she stole a very valuable Hand of Glory from one of his smaller storage lockers. He followed the woman, waiting for an opening to catch her and take the Hand back when he found something better, she was unknowingly leading him to a few of her small cash boxes and storage spots, so John made note and let her keep the damn Hand, making up his mind to come back for the money one day.
He caught a break though on the trail of the Colt, meeting back up with his sons to finally get his hands on the weapon, the only thing that could actually kill a demon. If he had known what a cluster fuck it would have turned into then he would have gone at it alone, but after being possessed by a demon and fighting off two more, it was much too late for that. The three of them were beat up and tired, and none of them saw the truck coming, when John woke in the hospital, it was to the news that his eldest boy was near death and he made the rashest decision of his life, though not one that he would ever regret. Summoning Azazel, he traded The Colt and his life for that of his son and was dragged to Hell.
People say that war is Hell, in reality it's more of a cake walk in comparison to the real thing. A year spent being torn apart and stitched back together only to be tortured and literally torn to pieces again drove the man to the brink, but he never broke, thinking of it as a sort of penance for all the things he had ever done wrong in his life. He refused to lessen his pain by taking it out on someone else, even if a demon literally ripped his entrails out and skipped rope with it once a week. He had braced himself for this the moment he decided to make that deal for Dean's life, he couldn't have known just what he was in for, but he would take it.
Through the talk of the demons, and the damned souls that wandered past, he learned about what was happening above, how Dean went and pulled the same stunt he had for Sam. Everything about the Apocalypse, the fact that his children were vessels, the fact that angels were as big of dicks as demons were. John felt even worse about his choices in life, the what if's were worse then anything the demons could have ever done to him. But Salvation came eventually, though he had never expected it to happen. Angels yanked him out of the pit, three of them there, the one that had known his boys the longest kept the new 'king of hell' busy while the other two did the actual pulling. Apparently they needed all hands on deck for whatever was coming this time around. After everything, it still wasn't over.
Fine, he had a bone to pick anyway, if the demons really thought they could fuck with his family and get away with it, they definitely had another thing coming. On the other side of that coin though, John had gone to hell and come back and he felt that a certain semi-retirement was in order. The first thing he did was go after the money Bela had stashed around, intent on starting up a bar of his own. Somewhat in the memory of the Harvelles, he had heard of their deaths at jaws of Hellhounds. A bar for the hunters to hang their hats for a while and hopefully hear the things through the grapevine that would take months to collect, because retired or no, he was not letting those demons get away unscathed, well that and he did have a debt to pay to a few angels.

John raised a brow ready to go into a fatherly 'drugs are bad' lecture and why he didn't approve of the idea but stopped himself, figuring that they had enough to go over as it was without John reprimanding him over something that he was probably using as a coping mechanism. One that John didn't approve of, but hell the old man had spent more then enough time staring down at the bottom of a bottle just so he could get some sort of sleep at night. So he bit down on his tongue to stop the lecture and instead took another long swing of the bottle, trying to figure out where to go from there.
Well the kid had a point, his boys were all a little too astute when it came right down to it damnit, and man it really did sound bad when he put it like that. Sitting down and running a hand through his hair tiredly John fixed his son with a thoughtful glance, "I didn't think you'd wanna see me Adam, hell it's not even that, I didn't think I could actually face you for another while," The older man grit his teeth, took a deeper swallow of the liquor and tried to figure out how he was going to explain it.
"It's my fault," The words were more of a whisper to himself then anything else, like he didn't want to admit it because he really just didn't, "Maybe if I had stayed away from you, hell maybe if you just weren't mine you wouldn't have these problems," John Winchester felt like he was a curse on his family when it came right down to it and he couldn't really bare that sad, haunted look on his kids faces and knowing that it was his fault that look was there. Because the old man really did believe that it was his fault. He wanted to think that he wasn't really avoiding his boy, but what he was avoiding was the blond and all mention of her, John didn't know what to think or how to feel about Nichole so he just pushed all thoughts of her away since he was unable to deal with it.
Watching Adam clean the gun with mild interest he took another swig, the ghost of a smile on his lips, "Well, ya are a liiitlle creepy," He tried to say playfully, sighing as he was sure that it didn't work out quite like he had hoped, "I'd rather if you didn't go wandering off," John tentatively let a hand rest on his shoulder, "I think....I think we should stick together right now, if not for you bunch then for me, I...... need you boys right now," John wasn't good with this sort of honesty, but there it was, "I also think I should teach you a thing or two about all this," He didn't want the boy blindsided again.
