[dean]It wasn't a feeling Dean could describe, not even if he was good with words, but it was there and it always started the same way: like his shoes were a little heavier, just enough to make his feet drag the slightest bit as he walked around the small motel room. It would ease if walked in just the right direction and the further he got from that, the more it spread until his whole body felt like he was trying to walk through Jell-O. Except not like that at all. Yeah, no, he couldn't describe it.
But it had started that morning and, knowing exactly what it was, he'd kept his stubborn ass in the room for two solid hours (it wasn't as bad if he stayed still) before he couldn't take it anymore, grabbed his keys and followed his feet out of the room and a couple blocks to a non-descript, typical eatery. It figured.
Not that he couldn't go for a bacon cheeseburger, it was just the principle, really. Scowling and taking a booth in the back corner, he flipped over his coffee mug in invitation and a waitress came over.
"Can I get you anything else?" she asked, somehow managing to snap her gum as she spoke.
"Not yet," he said with a tight smile, "I'm expecting someone."
"'Kay." And off she went.
After ten minutes he was still alone and sighed to himself, bowing his head and muttering under his breath in the same half-assed way he always did this, "Um, Cas, who art...up...Michael's butt.... Look, asshat, I'm here. Can you get a move on already?"[/dean]

[cas]At least he walked up to the booth, sat down across from Dean rather than just appearing in the seat. He was learning.
It was still the rumpled trench coat and the cheap suit, still the stubble on his cheeks and dark-eyed weariness. But there was no denying that Castiel was just way more human than he used to be. Whether that was a good or a bad thing was yet to be determined.
"I have never been anywhere near Michael's butt," he informed Dean seriously as he took a sip of Dean's ice water. "I doubt very much that he actually has an orifice there. It's possible that I am wrong, I've never asked about the anatomy of the archangels."
After this solemn little speech he gave Dean a steady look. "Have you finished feeling sorry for yourself? Or do you need more time?"[/cas]

[dean]Dean's face was bland all through Cas's educational speech about his proximity to Michael's ass and whether or not the arch douche had one. And, to his own credit, he didn't tell the angel to go screw himself at his question.
Instead, he reached for his coffee, took a long drink and asked, "Would it make a difference if I said I needed a few more weeks?"
His voice was as bland as his face as he asked, but inside he was roiling that Cas, his friend, was belittling everything he was feeling down to 'pouting'. Once upon a time he'd chalk that up to Cas being an angel, too far removed from humanity to understand, but now it was different, Cas was a lot closer to human, and the excuse didn't fly.[/dean]

[cas]Castiel gave that serious consideration. "If a few more weeks would really make the difference between being ready and not, it might be possible. It would mean accelerating certain things, though, and it makes Sam's lot rather more difficult. How many weeks do you need?" He thought he could manage two, even three. A month would be problematic, though. It was so difficult, predicting human's reactions, even now.[/cas]

[dean]Dean sighed. "You're a pain in the ass," he said, voice gruff and as close to affectionate as he got. He never talked about it because why on Earth would he, but the way Cas insisted on taking everything literally, even after all this time, was something he sort of counted on to keep him sane. Sometimes it even worked.
"That's good to know," he went on with a shake of his head and another drink of coffee. "But heaven forbid I make Sam's lot more difficult." He only sounded mostly bitter as he said it, which was a marked improvement in his opinion. "What do you want?"[/dean]

[cas]That blank look while Castiel tried and failed to figure out whether there had been a joke in there somewhere and then he got down to business. "Someone needs to find your father. Sam has already found Adam and is on his way to his next task, but your father has hidden himself from us too well. He must be located before the storm begins." He looked a bit sour as he said all of that, which was explained when he went on to elaborate, "This is what I have been told by one of my brothers who can read the future strands. I...believe him, even if it annoys me."[/cas]

[dean]Sam found Adam. Dean wasn't sure how he felt about that. The level of guilt he carried around with him because of what had happened to the brother he barely knew was planet sized. It was better for Sam to deal with him and, given their history, better for him to deal with their father.
Better, not good, however.
He winced, looking back up. "What makes you think I can find him? If he doesn't want to be found, you have a better shot at it than I do." Though if John was using angel repellent, it evened the playing field and they were both screwed.
He narrowed his eyes, watching Cas for a long minute. "What's Sam's next task? What the hell's going on, Cas? You're being vague..er than you usually are. What storm and what's my dad got to do with it?"
Dean wasn't sure he could take another world-in-danger anything, and that seemed to be the only kind of crisis that happened anymore. Better to find out now than later, but he just did not think he was up to it. [/dean]

[cas]Because it was Dean, only with him, Castiel looked frustrated, angry, and let that be heard in his voice. "I don't know. I only know that Raphael is recruiting followers, that the demons are becoming far more active, and that all of us can feel something coming. A storm on the horizon. We are shoring up against a crisis we cannot see."
He looked around the diner and at least considered ordering a cheeseburger. "I know that your family is intimately involved. And so I have sent Sam to gather up Adam and one other, and you to find John, and then you should all meet. Mend fences, if you can. You will need one another."[/cas]

[dean]"Wow," Dean said, rubbing tiredly at his eyes, "You don't ask much, do you?" Getting them all together wasn't going to be easy, not by a long shot, but getting along? Fucking impossible.
The was too much baggage between the four of them for that.
That had him looking at the angel again. "Wait, you said one other? What one other?"[/dean]

[cas]Castiel looked pained. The fact that he was doing this much emoting was probably a bad sign. "Ma--Zee Kerrick. I believe you know her. She's going to be involved in...whatever it is your family is getting into." He looked away like that was all the answer Dean would ever need, despite knowing it wasn't.
In hopes of distracting Dean, Castiel explained something else instead. "We brought them out. John and Adam. It took a long time to set up, your father was in Alastair's hands, Adam in the Cage. After bringing Sam out did so much damage we couldn't move until we were sure that we could get them out without harming them." A bare smile. "But then after all that we miscalculated at the end. We got them both out, and both of them managed to run away from us as soon as they knew what had happened to them. Run away, hide, and stay hidden." Another almost-smile. "The stubbornness of men in your family appears to be inborn."[/cas]

[dean]"You miscalculated," Dean said dryly, "That never happens." When were they going to learn? Probably never, angels were above that.
His eyes narrowed, watching Cas for a long minute and going back to what he'd first said. "Yeah, I know Zee," he told him, sounding less than happy about that. "She's a pain in my ass." Always about him, wasn't it? Except they both knew that wasn't true, it was always about Sam and - his eyes narrowed again, angrily this time.
"Tell me all of it, Cas."[/dean]

[cas]This was the moment when with anyone else Castiel would have gone angelic and inscrutable, that or just flat out refused to answer because Dean didn't need to know. But he'd been dealing with Dean Winchester for a long time now, and he knew that if he tried Dean would just dig his heels in and refuse to move in any direction.
So he thought about it for a minute, reviewing what he knew of the situation amd coming to the convenient decision that as Sam and Zee had found one another and things were continuing apace there it wouldn't hurt anything to break the news. He didn't really understand human delicacies like news that ought to come from those directly involved.
"Zee is pregnant with Sam's son." He made zero attempt to soften or modify it. Dean wanted to know, so he got the news. "The child must be kept safe."[/cas]

[dean]Dean suddenly felt like banging his head against something hard. Or punching Castiel. Maybe both.
He settled for rubbing tiredly at his eyes. "Of course she is," he said, ignoring the pain that spiked in his chest at the mention of a son, countless memories of time spent with Ben hammering at him in an unwanted flurry.
And he had to ask. "This storm. It center around...that?" He couldn't bring himself to say 'baby' in the same sentence with 'Sam' or Zee' Jesus Christ what was his brother thinking?[/dean]

[cas]"It is part of it," Castiel knew that much. "The child isn't the only touchstone of the coming conflict, but he has a role in it. A child of your family's blood is vulnerable to both Lucifer and Michael, a possible vessel for either of them."[/cas]

[dean]"Right," Dean said, the first real heat of anger creeping into his voice. "So we have to have a Walton Family Christmas to protect Zee and her uterus from who knows what - because, hey, these things aren't ever clear in the beginning."
He leaned forward and hissed, "You don't ask much, do you? If you can't find Dad I sure as shit can't, Adam, I'm sure, is extra full of hate for Sam and me, Sam and Dad sure as shit didn't end things on good terms and oh yeah, he and I are barely talking. I'll just go break out the egg nog."
He leaned back and reached for his coffee, tired of all it. His brother wanted to go and knock Zee up, let him save him and hell, the rest of the world with it. It would just end up being in danger again in six or nine months and how many more times could they possibly win. He was punching out.[/dean]
